Stopping Junk Mail Forever – For Free.

April 5, 2007

There are a lot of sites out there that will stop junk mail from coming to your house, but most of them charge you money to do something you can do for free. We all get too many catalogs, coupons, credit card invites and junk mail, and they all add up to 67 million tons of paper per year used for just this purpose. That’s 90 million trees. How can you stop this stuff from entering your home?

CATALOGS
All you have to do is call the catalog company and request that you get taken off their list. Most legitimate businesses will take you off immediately and though you still might receive one more, you should not get anymore after this. And besides, you can use the computer to peruse their selection, you don’t need a paper catalog to do it!

CREDIT CARD SIGN UP INVITATIONS
To stop those credit card offers from rolling in, you will need to contact the 3 credit bureaus: Equifax, Trans Union and Experian. Thankfully, this is an easy one. You just have to call one phone number and let them know you no longer want your info sold to credit card companies. The number is 1-888-567-8688.

JUNK MAIL, COUPONS, PENNY SAVER
This one is harder to go, but still can be stopped. First off, I wrote about stopping the Pennysaver before, so be sure to read that post. As for the other junk that makes its way into your house, you need to take yourself off the mailing lists of those companies that sell your addresses to marketers. The most effective way of doing this is to write a letter to the following address, telling them to remove you from any and all mailing and marketing lists:

Mail Preference Service / DMA
ATTN: Dept. 9407644
P.O. Box 643
Carmel, NY 10512
Tel. No.: 212-768-7277

Just by doing these three quick things you will dramatically reduce the amount of junk mail that you get. And if stuff comes in that you did not officially ask to stop coming, be sure to contact that company as well and get yourself off that list. Stopping this stuff is very easy; you do not need to pay a service to do it for you. Save yourself that money and do it yourself..and go out to dinner with the money you saved.
