However I do believe that use in drugs and medicines should be outlawed. We could do just fine avoiding the stuff, but what are you supposed to do when you kid is sick and you get a prescription medicine that has red40 in it? We would take a deep breath and try to make it through the week. In four days the infection would be kicked, and she would be coming undone at the seams from dosing red40 all week. Nobody should have to find themselves in that position when there are plenty of benign things out there to make medicine red - try beet juice and spare us the chemistry experiment. So many of these chemicals cause adverse reactions in people. Our friend who just had a baby went 9 months trying not to eat any of these colored food dyes, it was pretty hard to do. The fees would go into a public fund, and all safety studies would come out of public funding. All safety studies should be done in pairs, at least, to ensure two or more completely unrelated independent labs performing them. One way or another we need to stop giving credibility to the studies funded by those with vested interests.
