I have tried to convince people at my office to do so but they always say "Really, how much energy is being used when the computer is sleeping?" I for one do not really know the answer. I would like to give them a real number of how much energy and money is being wasted leaving the monitor on and for leaving a desktop on and leaving a laptop on. Do you know these numbers? Because without hard facts my fellow workers don't think it's worth the "energy" to turn them off. :( Makes me sad. I agree with you fully!
