Whither Earth Hour? The now annual global “action” that tries to get people to turn off their lights for 60 minutes as a stand against climate change. Not in my home. (Not mine either. I think it’s silly.)

For nearly a decade, I was an evangelical vegan – a born-again, plant-powered fundamentalist, resplendent in my animal-rights halo and heavenly faux-fur robes. Somewhere along the way, however, veganism stopped being synonymous with ethical treatment of animals and people. (Disclosure: I eat meat and will continue doing so.)

Though most climate science studies show evidence that climate change is real, the public persists in distrusting the science. That’s because of the doubt planted by climate change skeptics in the media and a lack of “media literacy education,” asserts Caren Cooper, a research associate who works on citizen science projects at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, in a Forum article in the March issue of BioScience magazine.

According to a new NASA-funded study, Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets are losing mass at a much faster rate than previous model forecasts have predicted.

New documents uncovered in the ongoing legal battle over Chevron/Texaco’s destruction of the Ecuadorian rainforest show that, while Chevron recently labeled the guilty verdict and $18 billion fine leveled against its Texaco unit by an Ecuadorian court as “illegitimate and unenforceable,” it was in fact the oil company that lobbied fiercely to have the case moved out of U.S. courts to the Ecuadorian justice system.
