Quick Green Reads For The Weekend Volume 211

It is no secret that consumers are suffering from very high gasoline prices. And as a result of these high prices, ExxonMobil just reported a first-quarter profit of $10.7 billion , 69 percent higher than a year ago. The national level of disgust and anger is approaching record levels as we watch the loss of our hard-earned dollars become Big Oil’s gain. The question is, what are we going to do about it?

It turns out that Monsanto’s Roundup herbicide might not be nearly as safe as people have thought, but the media is staying mum on the revelation. (Could it be because they give millions to enviro orgs like The Nature Conservancy?)

People have been riding the rails for centuries. Traveling by train is one of the oldest and smartest ways to travel. It’s a very environmentally-friendly form of transportation while at the same time provides a relaxation and view of the world that you can’t get from any other angle. This Saturday (May 7th) is the perfect time to climb aboard and go for a train ride. Why? Well, it’s National Train Day!

A few weeks ago I posted here on The Greenists site about my plan to take the 100 Mile Diet Challenge in July 2011. I thought it would be a breeze. After all, I live in a rural area with a fine farmers market, I grow my own veggies and raise chickens, and several small farms in my area offer CSAs.

Environmental groups on Tuesday sued the city of Chicago’s water treatment authority, charging its sewage promotes algae growth that is choking Midwestern rivers and contributes to the Gulf of Mexico’s “dead zone.”

Have a great weekend everyone!

Thanks David for sharing my post on National Train Day!

Also just wanted to say I enjoy reading your Quick Green Reads every week as there are always things I haven’t seen before.

I especially liked the post about the 100 Mile Diet Challenge. Shows some good points about what it really takes. You sometimes think you’ve got so much locally, but then forget about ALL the other things you eat that aren’t grown anywhere nearby.
