The other day I received the following question from Rachel M., a long-time reader of The Good Human:
“Do you take any daily vitamins? If you do, are there any you can recommend that are organic and safer than the cheap ones found at the drugstore? Thanks!”
Since I figured that there may be other people out there who could benefit from hearing my response, I wanted to do it here on the site. I do take a few daily vitamins, Rachel, and they are all from the same company — New Chapter. These guys make safe, mostly organic whole food-based vitamins and supplements rather than ones derived from synthetic ingredients, and they also have their own organic farm that they source many ingredients from. They are also a certified member of the Non-GMO Project, a non-profit collaboration committed to preserving and building sources of non-GMO products. Cool, right? Much better for you than those generic pills they sell at the local convenience store which are often contaminated with lead!
Here is what I take every morning with my breakfast:
- Every Man’s One Daily
- Zyflamend (for inflammation response)
- Wholemega Whole Fish Oil
- Vitamin D
In addition to these pills being made from organic and non-GMO food sources, they also come in glass bottles! This reduces the amount of plastic your foods are exposed to and ensures that your local recycling facility can recycle the bottles when you are done with them. (Many towns don’t recycle plastic) They do tend to be on the pricey side, but I have found that if I order them from Amazon.com on a Subscribe & Save program, I can save a ton over the price at a Whole Foods store. Either way, I don’t mind paying a little bit more for healthy, safe vitamins made from real ingredients; after all, this is the only body each of us has! Many of us gladly waste money on items way less important than our food and vitamins, so this is definitely a worthwhile investment in yourself.
While New Chapter are my favorites, other popular organic vitamin brands are Nature’s Way, Now Foods Organics, and Source Naturals. While eating right and exercising is the most important thing you can do for your health, if you also choose to take supplements be sure you are taking safe, organic, food-based supplements and not the inexpensive, potentially dangerous ones. There is no shortcut or cheap way out of maintaining a healthy body!
