Caltech Eliminates Bottled Water On Campus

Remember back when I wrote about all the reasons not to drink bottled water? Well, it seems that the California Institute of Technology has realized this too as they recently eliminated bottled water sales/availability at their commencement ceremony. By providing attendees with compostable cups and graduates with stainless steel bottles, only filtered tap water was made available for anyone needing a drink.

”At the end of last year’s ceremony, our groundskeepers found hundreds of bottles still nearly full and many more empty water bottles littering the lawn,” said Delmy Emerson, Caltech Director of Building and Grounds.  ”This year, less than a handful of empties brought in by guests were left behind for disposal.”

The Container Recycling Institute says that plastic water bottles are disposed of (not recycled) at the rate of 30 million a day and that 88% of empty plastic water bottles in the United States are not recycled. The EPA sets much more stringent quality standards for tap water than the FDA does for the bottled stuff, and with tap water costing just a small fraction of bottled water (which is mostly filtered tap water anyway), switching to a reusable bottle not only saves waste but also reduces the cost of your drinking water. So do the planet and your wallet a favor and start drinking filtered tap water out of a stainless steel unit rather than a plastic single-use one!
