10 Things You Never Dreamed You Could Recycle

Everyone knows that you can recycle bottles, cans, and paper. But there are many other things that can be recycled or reused through a variety of companies and organizations, or just by applying a little creativity. Let’s take a look at ten things you may not know you could recycle:

1. Old Cars – Old cars can be sold for metal or for parts, both excellent alternatives to just junking them. Alternatively, they can be donated to a charity that has a car donation program.

2. Cell Phone – Got a sleek new smartphone? Make sure to recycle that old one. There are more than 500 million used cell phones in people’s drawers or in landfills. Recycle My Cell Phone refurbishes your phone for reuse or removes the parts and uses them for other phones.

3. Your Wardrobe – Trade in, or sell your old or unused clothing at Rag-O-Rama. Bring in your clothing to one of their locations and they will give you cash or store credit for them.

4. Reuse Crayons – Everyone has old, broken crayons around. Many of them are just small nubs, unusable for coloring. Here is a great article on how to reuse those crayons.

5. Toothbrush – Some great environmentally friendly toothbrushes can be found, and here are tips on what to do with your not so environmentally friendly ones.

6. Eyeglasses – Recycle your old eyeglasses. Eyeglasses in good condition are sent to medical missions and international charitable organizations for distribution to the poor in developing nations. Visit Moraleyes.com for drop off locations.

7. Prom Dress – Wore that prom dress once, now what? Let someone else have the best night of their lives, courtesy of The Bella Project.

8. Reuse Old Socks – Great list of innovative things you can do with your old socks. Items including making potpourri holders or sock jump ropes.

9. Hair – For example, you can donate it to an organization that makes wigs for sick children.

10. Yoga Mats – Have an old Yoga mat lying around the house? Recycleyourmat.com reuses, recycles, or upcycles your mats. You can drop it off at one of their locations or mail it in.

My dad is a pastor, and when it came time to replace the candles on the altar I would take the old ones and melt them down, using crayons as dye, and give the candles as Christmas and Birthday gifts. Cost-effective, eco-friendly, and handmade. You can’t get better gifts than that.

I like using crayons to add color to fragments of candles too. I am a constant wardrobe recycler and often use Plato’s Closet for recycling clothes, it’s a nationwide chain. However, I prefer to donate nice clothes to women’s shelters, as the money you get back is relatively small and to purchase from these is still a tad pricey.
