My point was that supposed "greens" do a good job of preaching environmentalism, but their actions showcase that they don't live up to what they are preaching. Their actions need to match their words if we are to inspire real change.

"We need to get away from that idea and promote real, true changes in behavior and lifestyle. We need to lead by example…"

Very true, but all I hear are words and ideas. WHAT and HOW are environmentalists going to promote these changes? "Lead by example" but again, you don't say how. I agree with you, don't get me wrong, I just feel it is more important to actually act NOW and tell people HOW to act now. So tell us, what is the 'program' and how are we suppose to create change?

The most appalling of all Eco-Friendly products is the shopping bag. You see it everywhere, in every store...each one having a tiny plastic ring upon which the price tag - made of paper - resides. Really? Once again - love your site!

Awesome! Thank you for the common sense write up! It is about time people start speaking the truth about this issue. My favorite are celebs who receive accolades for all their environmental work while at the same time are destroying pristine lands, displacing native wildlife to build "Eco" resorts or tout flying commercial half a dozen times a year, refusing to acknowledge that carbon footprint. America needs to wake up. Global warming is not for marketing purposes and being "Green" should NOT be a fad!!

I hope every green blogger reads this article and thinks about it. While I am open to the idea that there are many ways reduce our footprints on the planet, I also get a little frustrated when I see blogs that claim to be green but are centered around giveaways and product reviews. I think some fundamental idea about consuming less and considering the planet in all of our actions has gotten lost amid the flurry of 'green' products that are, really, just slightly less bad for the environment than the things they replace. I'm not a fan of the 'use a reusable bag, save the planet' type of message -- it make make us feel better about ourselves, but it's ignoring a much, much bigger and scarier reality.

I'm not confident at this point that we're going to be able to do anything but adapt to climate change. We might still have time to mitigate some of its worst effects, but we'd have to get to a tipping point very quickly -- enough people doing enough to substantially reduce their impact. Or our global leaders would have to overrule major corporations and political squabbling and finally put planetary survival above economics and national interests. Not sure which is less likely.
