Obama Offers Incentives for Faster Development of Alternative Fuel Vehicles

March 8, 2012

President Obama was in North Carolina at a Daimler Trucks North America manufacturing plant yesterday, calling for new incentives for car manufacturers to build, and Americans to buy, more efficient and alternative fuel vehicles. During his State of the Union speech in January he called for the US to become the first country to have more than a million electric vehicles on the road by 2015, and just the other day he called for an end to the $4 billion in subsidies given to oil companies each year. Seems that the president has some great interest in moving more of us towards electric vehicles and reducing carbon emissions from gasoline-burning cars, which I would think most of us can applaud.

His visit to North Carolina saw him deem oil the “fuel of the past” and call on Congress to provide $1 billion in grants to encourage cities and towns to adapt more fuel efficient transportation. In addition to the grants he requested, the president also wants tax incentives for fuel-efficient vehicle manufacturers and buyers alike, so that we can all adopt this technology sooner rather than later.

Whether gas prices are high or low, we need to move quicker on adopting more fuel-efficient and EV vehicles. Oil is only going to become more scarce, and we need to use the oil we can access now to start building for a future that doesn’t have it so easily available. If we wait to build an alternatively-fueled transportation future, we won’t have the necessary parts (namely oil) that will be required to do so. The time is now, and I am so glad we have a president interested in promoting a sustainable future rather than one just encouraging us to “drill, baby, drill” which does nothing to calm oil prices or save us from foreign oil.

What do you think? Do you think we should be cutting subsidies to oil companies and offering tax incentives for manufacturing and purchasing alternative-fueled cars?
