March heatwave ‘unprecedented’, signals a warming climate

March 26, 2012

Turns out I wasn’t imagining it – the fact that it has been in the 70’s here in Vermont for much of March does signal a warming climate, no matter what the naysayers have to say about it. The organization Climate Central said that since March 12 more than 7,000 temperature records have been equaled or exceeded, and some low temperatures were actually beating the previous high temperatures in certain areas.

The website for Climate Central even takes a look at just how early spring has or is arriving all over the United States, and some states are seeing Spring arrive about a week earlier than average.

While day to day weather is not an indicator of overall climate change, looking at long-term patterns we can see that our world is in fact warming up It’s still possible that we could have a brutal blizzard-filled winter later this year, but that doesn’t change the fact that worldwide we are seeing drastic changes in our climate. Just because winter comes back it doesn’t mean climate change isn’t happening; it’s a process over time and not a one-time event. So while it was nice to have a warm winter, the fact that it happened at all is not a good sign.

T-shirts, shorts, and flip flops in Vermont in March? That’s scary.
