Could Eating More Alkalising Foods Improve Your Health?

From our days in school, we have learned that the human body likes to maintain a pH level of around 7.365. Many of us eating a typical Western diet will find our bodies are actually much more acidic than they should be. Eating a diet with more alkalised foods could be a solution to gaining the balance that we need.

To give you an idea of the extremes of the pH scale, consider that Stomach acid has a pH level of 0, while bleach is closer to 14. The ideal level for the human body should be close to the centre, slightly leaning over towards alkaline on the spectrum.

Our blood and other cells will always strive to come back to this equilibrium – no matter what we do, eat, drink or smoke and how stressed we might become. So what is the point in making any changes?

Making changes to support our body’s natural preferences is the difference between forcing it to fight to balance pH, or making it a breeze. It is clear that anything we can do to create the best environment for cell processes to take place would benefit us. The good news is that there are simple steps we can take to help our body to maintain a slightly alkaline pH level in our cells.

Microbiologist Robert Young states “The pH level of our internal fluids affects every cell in our bodies. The entire metabolic process depends on an alkaline environment. Chronic over acidity corrodes body tissue, and if left unchecked will interrupt all cellular activities and functions, from the beating of your heart to the neural firing of your brain. In other words, over-acidity interferes with life itself.”

The ideal pH level for our blood is between 7.35 and 7.45. This small window of alkaline perfection means an environment where unfriendly bacteria, cancer, viruses and fungi cannot thrive. Our cells are able to function properly at this level.

An acidic diet works against the bodies efforts and can leave us vulnerable to disease and inflammation.

Eating a diet that is high in acidic foods, especially when combined with a stressful lifestyle, results in drastic measures by our body to balance the pH of the blood. Once such way the body achieves a pH balance is by storing acid as fat in order to protect our organs. Some studies suggest that reducing the acid in the body can aid with weight loss for this reason. Calcium is also taken from teeth and bones to bring the alkaline level back to equilibrium. This could contribute towards osteoporosis (weakness of the bones).

Armed with this knowledge it can be very simple to stop the cycle of damage we are unconsciously causing on a daily basis.

We have said that many foods that make up the standard western diet are acidic. Being aware of the pH level of the foods that we consume, and choosing those that have naturally high alkaline levels is one of the most effective ways we can make a difference.

More Simple ways to boost your pH balance

So you see, it can be very easy to incorporate alkalising foods into your daily diet, supporting your body’s natural functions. The following soup recipe from www.bbc.goodfood.com is a fantastic one to balance pH. Plus it is packed with nutrients and low in fat!

Ingredients

  • 500ml stock, made by mixing 1 tbsp bouillon powder and boiling water in a jug
  • 1 tbsp sunflower oil
  • 2 garlic cloves, sliced
  • thumb-sized piece ginger, sliced
  • ½ tsp ground coriander
  • 3cm/1in piece fresh turmeric root, peeled and grated, or ½ tsp ground turmeric
  • pinch of pink Himalayan salt
  • 200g courgettes, roughly sliced
  • 85g broccoli
  • 100g kale, chopped
  • 1 lime, zested and juiced
  • small pack parsley, roughly chopped, reserving a few whole leaves to serve

Method

  1. Put the oil in a deep pan, add the garlic, ginger, coriander, turmeric and salt, fry on a medium heat for 2 mins, then add 3 tbsp water to give a bit more moisture to the spices.
  2. Add the courgettes, making sure you mix well to coat the slices in all the spices, and continue cooking for 3 mins. Add 400ml stock and leave to simmer for 3 mins.
  3. Add the broccoli, kale and lime juice with the rest of the stock. Leave to cook again for another 3-4 mins until all the vegetables are soft.
  4. Take off the heat and add the chopped parsley. Pour everything into a blender and blend on high speed until smooth. It will be a beautiful green with bits of dark speckled through (which is the kale). Garnish with lime zest and parsley.

It may also be beneficial to choose alkaline water over tap water, as a quick and easy way to keep the body pH at an optimum level.

Keeping stress levels low is also essential to keeping the levels of acid down. This can be anything that relaxes your body, and makes you feel good. Exercise, dancing and getting outside in nature are all great suggestions to help reduce stress.
