Supporting Local Farmers – Buying Fresh Eggs From A Co-worker.

Last week, my wife came home with a carton of eggs. No biggie, right? Well, she didn’t get them from the grocery store, but rather a co-worker of hers that has 12 chickens at home. She sells the eggs to everyone at work for $3 a dozen, and her chickens produce an egg a day – meaning she has a dozen new eggs to sell or eat every day! She even reuses the cartons when her customers are done with their eggs. All year long we will now be able to buy fresh, organic eggs anytime we want without having to worry about where they came from or whether the chickens were pumped with growth hormones. Her chickens live cage-free and only eat organic feed, and you can definitely see and taste the difference in the eggs – they not only have much more flavor than factory farm eggs, but they are different sizes and much more yellow when cooked up.

You know you live in the country when a woman you work with can sell you eggs that her chickens laid yesterday out in her backyard! Most anything you want to eat can be found locally here (we got some salad lettuce a few weeks ago from another coworker), and we are slowly figuring who to get what from. It certainly is a pretty fun adventure, and not only does the food taste better but we feel good knowing we are supporting all of our local farmers as well.

  1. I agree with you halfway! Local raised eggs are much healthier and have a lot better color, but disagree with you on the part about having to live in the country. I live right in the middle of the city of Hampton, but we get eggs fresh from one of our neighbors. He lives about a half-mile away, but he takes advantage of a law that many cities have that allow you to keep two chickens for personal use. He actually keeps about 6-7, but this still allows several dozen eggs per week. Since he only keeps 2-3 solid customers, every two weeks we show up and purchase 2 dozen eggs fresh from the henhouse! The price is cheaper than Walmart eggs, but taste twice as good! Even if your readers live in the city, I’d suggest checking Craigslist or looking for local “minifarmers”. Definitely worth the 1/2 mile bike ride!

  2. No one said you had to live in the country! It’s just a lot easier to find everything you need to eat from local sources when you did. Congrats on finding the egg neighbor, that’s awesome.

  3. hmm, I might have to look into getting a couple chickens. My mac n cheese is already pretty banging, with FRESH eggs, I can’t even imagine!

    make sure I don’t get a rooster though! that would suck.

  4. And the eggs taste THAT much better. We had to suck it up and buy eggs from the grocer once and they were so plasticky. Done w/ that. Sticking to our farmer.

  5. We have been living in the country for a fiew years and have been able to make all the contacts for organic eggs, beef, pork,veggies etc.. its great. Spring,summer and fall our town holds weekly markets where all the farmers display their produce..mostly all organic. We want to encourage our farmers and eventhough its slightly more expensive to buy organic, I think food is important and its nice to know where its coming from. Added bonus it tastes great!
