Do One Thing: Leave No Trace.

This week’s Do One Thing is for those of you who enjoy spending time in the great outdoors. Hiking, biking, camping, boating – while all of these outdoor activities are lots of fun and good for your health, as a devoted “greenie”, you have to be aware of any impact that you may be having on the environment. That’s where the organization Leave No Trace comes in – to help you make the right choices while spending time outside! Some of their basic principles include:

  • Know the regulations and special concerns for the area you’ll visit.
  • Use a map and compass to eliminate the use of marking paint, rock cairns or flagging.
  • Protect riparian areas by camping at least 200 feet from lakes and streams.
  • Keep campsites small. Focus activity in areas where vegetation is absent.
  • Pack it in, pack it out. Inspect your campsite and rest areas for trash or spilled foods. Pack out all trash, leftover food, and litter.

If you are one who likes spending time outdoors, you should definitely check out Leave No Trace!
