Nothing says “personal” like a handmade gift for the holidays. If you cannot make it yourself (like yours truly), you might want to check out some sites that offer handmade gifts from both artists in this country and abroad. That way, you are not giving a gift covered in plastic wrap from some foreign factory; rather, you made an effort to really search high and low for a gift you thought the receiver would enjoy – and it’s handmade by a true crafts-person. Some sites to check out:
Etsy – Etsy is an online marketplace for buying & selling all things handmade. Our mission is to enable people to make a living making things, and to reconnect makers with buyers. Our vision is to build a new economy and present a better choice: Buy, Sell, and Live Handmade.
Ten Thousand Villages – At Ten Thousand Villages, we work with over 100 artisan groups in more than 30 countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America to bring you fair trade jewelry, home decor, gifts and more. As one of the world’s oldest and largest fair trade organizations, we build long-term relationships with artisans that are based on mutual understanding and respect. Fair trade enables artisans to earn a fair wage and provides the opportunity for a better quality of life.
