Chances are that your water heater uses more energy than it needs to, heating your water up to temps hotter than you need them to be. I know that in every apartment I have moved into, I have turned down the water heater and not noticed any difference in the temperature or the amount of hot water that I get. Keeping it set so high wastes a lot of energy (never mind money!), so see if you can lower it just a little. Turn the knob at the bottom a little bit towards the lower end and wait a day or so. If you are still getting enough hot water, try to lower it even more. The lower it is set, the more money you save and the less energy you waste.

  1. Be careful with this one. I had a water safety engineer tell me that it’s caused bacteria problems for a lot of people. When a water heater is turned up it’s too hot for the bacteria to live and is safe but when it gets turned down it can be just about the perfect environment for bacteria to grow. So be careful.

  2. Also if it’s too low, the dishwasher will do a terrible job of cleaning the dishes, meaning you will need to run it twice, thus using more energy. The trick here is to find a happy medium between too hot and not hot enough. Excellent tip though for sure.
