Growing up I thought my mom was insane for washing aluminum foil, letting it dry, and then reusing it for something else. But now I see she was an environmentalist (of sorts) before it was even fashionable! Used aluminum foil that is not ripped or damaged in any way is perfectly fine once washed and can be used over and over again. There is absolutely no reason to toss a sheet of aluminum paper that was used once but is still in fine condition…unless of course it was wrapped around raw meat and then I wouldn’t recommend it! But if you can, try to use your aluminum foil more than once and keep some of it out of the trash (or recycling bin) for longer!

  1. How funny, my mom used to do that too! I thought she was a little strange myself but find myself doing all sorts of things that she used to do…weird, huh?

  2. I wash out and re-use ziploc bags and my friends make fun of me. The funny thing is, I used to be soooo embarassed that my parents did this, and now I couldn’t be more proud of them.

Now I’m the girl who’s digging through the garbage at work to separate out the bottles and paper from the normal trash. It drives me nuts that people can’t do it themselves, especially since I work for an environmental organization (not kidding).

Nice blog, I will be back…

  3. Also, you can recycle tin foil (at least in New York you can), so make sure it goes in the right bin once it’s been washed and used and washed and used (until its got holes in it or a nasty cranberry stain).
