Some green news for you, should you be so inclined…

Boston Mayor Will Fight To Keep Chick-Fil-A Out Of His City – And he released a rather blunt statement on the matter. Boston Mayor Thomas Menino was none too pleased when he heard that Chick-fil-A wanted to open a location near the city’s historic Freedom Trail. Menino found Chick-fil-A’s anti-gay record to be at odds with his city’s stance on equality. Kudos to Mayor Menino. Awesome.

The Office of the Inspector General (OIG), at the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), released a brief report on July 23 outlining their review of serious allegations of collusion with corporate agribusiness, conflicts of interest, illegal appointments and false information tainting the decision-making on the part of the National Organic Standards Board, the expert panel created by Congress to protect the integrity of the organic label.

Bad cholesterol, depression, high blood pressure; these are all conditions that often prompt a trip to the pharmacy. But now, physicians are administering a different treatment entirely: produce. Doctors at select clinics across the country are writing some obese patients “prescriptions” for fruits and vegetables. Fantastic idea, right?

NASA researchers studying data from the Indian Space Research Organisation’s (ISRO) Oceansat-2 satellite this month noticed that the ice melt area on Greenland covered almost the entire ice sheath. This is very unusual and means that melting was occurring over almost the entire surface of the ice sheath. In most summers, the melting occurs in portions of the ice sheath while other areas are not melting. Typically, less than half the ice sheath is melting at one time. Not good. Seriously. Not good.

The Buijtenkitchen, a conceptual project by Studio Elmo Vermijs, challenges the very idea of what a restaurant can be. Rather than importing food into the kitchen to be prepared, the Buijtenkitchen seeks out local harvests and plants itself on farms themselves by the most seasonal produce possible. So instead of serving up local/seasonal cuisine of a single region, it can seek out local seasonal cuisines of every region. Would love to have one of these near me, wouldn’t you?

Have a great weekend, everyone.
