Is Your Sunscreen Making You Sick Instead Of Protecting You?

It may be. Did you know that the Food and Drug Administration’s 2007 sunscreen safety regulations say that the “FDA is not aware of data demonstrating that sunscreen use alone helps prevent skin cancer”? Me neither! While every major public health agency still advises people to use sunscreen, there is now an increased importance being put on wearing more clothing in the sun and avoiding the peak hours of sunlight. While I wrote about the EWG’s 2010 sunscreen guide a few weeks ago, I was revisiting the page this morning when I came across a different page titled Sunscreens Exposed: 9 surprising truths that really caught my eye. A few things of note from the list:

There’s some evidence that sunscreens might increase the risk of the deadliest form of skin cancer for some people.

Too little sun might be harmful, reducing the body’s vitamin D levels.

The common sunscreen ingredient vitamin A may speed the development of cancer.

Well, that’s certainly some news! As someone who has had melanoma, I now don’t know whether it’s better to slather myself in sunscreen OR to just wear long pants, long sleeves, a hat, sunglasses, and a bandana when I go outside. Look for the guy sitting under a bridge overpass at high noon, and you will have found me.
