Surprise, surprise. Seriously, this company never ceases to amaze me.

The executive vice president and chief technology officer of everyone’s favorite GMO biotech company Monsanto, Robert T. Fraley, has won a “World Food Prize” from The World Food Prize Foundation.

“The biotechnology products have not been without controversy and so having the prize recognize the three scientists and groups who really helped launch this modern era of plant biotechnology I think is special,” said Fraley, who grew up on a farm in central Illinois with an interest in science and a passion for agriculture. “We all recognize that this award says a lot for how important biotechnology is for the future.”

The award is for the work they did to develop a way to insert genes into plants that can resist insects and drought. Seems like something that should win an award, don’t you think? The World Food Prize, which has been criticized in the past for favoring industrial agriculture, and this “award” certainly shows that bias.

The crazy part? A few years ago, Monsanto gave the organization $5 million. Am I alone in thinking there is a tie-in here?

The World Food Prize recognizes “the achievements of individuals who have advanced human development by improving the quality, quantity or availability of food in the world.”

It’s disheartening to know that companies are now getting awards for destroying the planet, and there isn’t a damn thing any of us can do about it. All of this progress is going to come back and bite us in the you-know-what. Screwing with the genetic makeup of the very thing that allows humanity to exist? Not a great idea, if you ask me. There are real reasons why there are so many of us against GMOs.

I think I am going to start a foundation and then award myself the grand prize every year. Anyone want to fund that on Kickstarter for me?
