To be honest, I never ever wanted to write the words SpongeBob SquarePants anywhere…but I sure broke that wish. CNN is reporting that SpongeBob SquarePants journals, various spinning tops and children’s jewelry are being recalled due to excessive levels of lead. What exactly is being recalled?

The recall involves address books and journals sold in stores nationwide from June 2006 through July 2007 with SpongeBob on the front cover and a black metal spiral binding, with UPC numbers 80773007505, 80773002260, 80773075501 and 80773007551 printed on the back covers.

About 66,000 Thomas and Friends, Curious George and other spinning tops and 4,700 tin pails are being recalled for lead paint on the surface of wooden handles.

Ugh. What’s that, recall number 2,351,432 this week? Please…if you look for toys for your kids buy ones made out of wood with non-toxic water-based sealants on them. The stuff from China is cheap for a reason…it used to just be slave labor and cheap material but now it’s because they throw in an extra layer of lead paint.

  1. I shudder to think where the lead-contaminated toys will go – landfill. Do we really need more lead leaching into our ground water?

  2. I know Mattel is taking their toys back for “recycling”, but if their recycling program is anything like their toy program, then you are right…landfill it is.
