There is a two-part series coming up June 2nd and 3rd on CNN called Toxic America that I think everyone needs to check out. The show will be hosted by Dr. Sanjay Gupta with the first night, dubbed Toxic Towns USA, focusing on a year-long investigation into the residents of Mossville, Louisiana, who for decades have claimed that toxic chemicals in the air have been making them sick. The second night, Toxic Childhood, delves into effects of unseen chemicals on ALL of us, particularly how much of these toxins are being passed onto the babies of pregnant women. The fact that over 80,000 chemicals are in use in this country and only a few hundred of them have been tested for safety is crazy (The EPA doesn’t require chemicals be tested before use. Seriously.) – we are literally making ourselves sick.

Check out some of the findings that the show is going to highlight:

  • Exposure to car and truck exhaust in the womb has been shown to result in lower IQ at age five.
  • Babies enter the world with more than 200 dangerous chemicals in their blood (!), including flame retardants, dioxins, substances in non-stick coatings like Teflon and hormone-like compounds found in plastic.
  • Out of the 80,000 chemicals in use in the United States, the EPA has only tested about 200 and only banned five.

You don’t want to miss this series, and please tell your friends and family to watch it too. Unfortunately most people don’t realize just how toxic our lives have become and what it is doing to us both in the short and long term.
