This weekend my wife and I were going through some stuff as we prepare to move and I came across a report I wrote about the ozone layer in 1987 – when I was just 15 years old. Yep, 21 years ago. Mind you I had no idea what I was talking about, but it sure made for a good laugh. So in the interest of trying to make my past self look like a dummy, here in all it’s glory is my high school report on the danger of the depletions of the ozone layer.
About 4 years ago, scientists discovered a large amount of ozone missing from the atmosphere above Antarctica. There has been many ideas about why this happens, but the real reason is a chemicals called chlorofluorocarbons (CFC’s). This chemical is used for coolants in refrigerators and air conditioners, cleaning spray for microchips and for making plastic foams. When any of these items are not in use, their compounds go into the stratosphere and rapidly destroy the protective ozone layer.
The ozone depletion could be extremely dangerous to mankind in the future. The more we use CFC’s, the worse the situation gets. The ozone layer protects the earth from harmful ultraviolet rays. But now, with a hole in the atmosphere, those rays can reach us more easily, and cause serious damage. Ultraviolet rays cause skin cancer, sunburn and weakening of the cataracts. Everyone on earth would be affected by this, so we should all care about what could be done about the problem.
I have a couple of ideas about how this problem could be solved, but I think the best one is to develop a new chemical. This chemical would take the place of CFC’s in coolants and the like, and it would not hurt the atmosphere. I don’t know if this could be possible, but I think it would be worth a try.
With the scientists we have today, I would not doubt it if they came up with some sort of a new product to solve the problem. As to my solution being carried out, I would think that something like it would be invented and produced. It would have a lot of effect on the way people think right now knowing that there is a product out. Who knows, it just might work.
If I really wanted my idea to work, I would have to let the scientists who are working on the problem know. They might take it into consideration and they might not, but at least they would have it for future reference if they don’t. I could also let the President know about it, and if he likes it, he could send it along to those same scientists.
The exact chemistry of the ozone depletion is not known. But as I said earlier, the basic idea of the problem is that the CFC’s are going into the atmosphere and destroying the ozone layer. There has been many different studies, but nobody has figured out the chemical process. Everyone should know what is going on. If everyone on earth read about it, more solutions could be thought up. This subject is too serious to be thrown out. People should think about it and figure out ways to control the ozone layer depletion.
So what do you think about that, heh? My 15 year old mind should let the scientists know!
