Courtesy of a subscription to Body & Soul magazine, here are some natural cures made from ingredients you can find right in your kitchen. If possible, it’s always better to try natural remedies before reaching for a bottle of medicine. Some of them we have tried and others are on our “to-do” list, so if something doesn’t work, don’t blame me!

Sore Throats

Fill a tablespoon halfway with honey and then squeeze a lemon to fill up the spoon. Add a sprinkle of cayenne pepper, put the spoon in your mouth, and suck on it slowly.


Add a few drops of water to 1/8 teaspoon ground cloves to make a paste. Pack this on the sore gum for 5-10 minutes, then spit out. Repeat as needed. (Not for babies or toddlers)


Grate an inch of peeled, fresh ginger. Take a pinch of it and mix with a pinch of sea salt to make a paste. Chew on the mixture for a minute then swallow, washing it down with warm water.


Fill a small bowl with ice water and add 5 to 7 drops of peppermint oil. Dip a washcloth into the bowl, wring it out, and apply to forehead for 10-15 minutes.

Bug Bites

Apply a banana peel, fruit-side down, directly on the bite and hold it until the itching subsides.

Stuffy Head

Pick up a jar of spicy salsa and snack away!


Make your own pesto. Add a cup of fresh basil leaves to a food processor along with a clove of garlic, a pinch of salt, and 2 tablespoons of pine nuts. Turn the processor on, drizzle in some olive oil until you like the way it looks. Eat 3 spoonfuls whenever you need to!

Skin Infections

Spread a layer of honey over the infected skin and cover with a secure bandage. Leave it in place for 24 hours if you can. Honey is great for this because it promotes granulation of the tissue and draws infection out of the body.

  1. Chew some raw onion for sore throat. Painful but does work.

    Bandage whole comfrey leaves over infected ulcers. That really works a treat. You need to replace them every so often. My grandmother did this with a particularly nasty leg ulcer which didn’t respond to medical treatment and it healed up in about a week.

    1. I know this comment was made years ago, but I thought you might find it interesting that comfrey in German is called “Beinwell”:
      “Bein” is related to the english word “bone”, and means “leg” in modern German.
      It has been used as a treatment for fractures, open wounds, and even injuries to tendons since ancient times.

  2. Dang you for mentioning spicy salsa. Now i’m hungry.

    My cure goes something along the line of:
    “[your aliment here]? Drink more water.”

    Proven effective on many problems. Effects may be enhanced with saltine crackers…

    Yes, I’m still hungry.

  3. I have two suggestions:

    1. Warts: Apple cider vinegar. Apply apple cider vinegar to the wart with a q-tip before bed, and cover with a bandaid. It will sting and burn and look horribly nasty, for a few days, but then the wart will be gone. I used it on a wart on my finger and it has never returned.

    2. Chamomile tea is wonderful to de-stress.
