Thanks to grants from the South Coast Air Quality Management District, the Los Angeles Unified School District will soon have a total of 403 CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) school buses operating across district boundaries.

We are fortunate to live on rural mountain property in Northern California with a creek that is not seasonal, although the volume of water does drop significantly during the arid months of summer. The beauty of hydro power is that it produces power 24 hours a day and is not dependent upon weather patterns, such as sun and wind. The drawbacks are having to maintain the system by cleaning the intake and dealing with varying creek flows.

Perhaps it is time to put a measure on state ballots not only to ask voters about legalizing marijuana for medicinal and recreational purposes, but also for harvesting its potential as an alternative fuel. Marijuana can be seen as an alternative fuel as evidenced by “Researchers at the University of Connecticut have found that the fiber crop Cannabis sativa, known as industrial hemp, has properties that make it viable and attractive as a raw material, or feedstock for producing biodiesel, sustainable diesel fuel made from renewable plant sources.”

Though trucks have developed a bad reputation over the years for gas consumption and air pollution, the trouble is that many people simply need trucks for work or for personal reasons. Because of my commitment to living green and my interaction with a population that relies on trucks, I have made an effort to help them clean up their image by staying abreast of manageable green solutions that I can pass along.
