A vertical garden is an ideal way to grow your own herbs and vegetables in a small space. Having a problem with cats digging and soiling in your vegetable patch? This is a solution to both space and cat problems. The vertical garden is a neat design that can be hung anywhere, without taking too much of your space.
Hanging pocket shoe organizer /store.
Pole and attachments (curtain pole or pipe fittings, screws).
Strong metal saucepan or utensil hanging hooks.
Compost of a good quality moisture holding type.
Your selection of plants or seeds. For example: mixed leaf salad, herbs, sorrel, peas, cherry tomatoes.
Piece of wood 2″x2″ (make sure that it is as long as the width of the pocket store to keep the base of the pockets away from the wall).
Trough planter to catch drips.
Attach the pole to a shed or wall. A curtain pole is sufficient provided that that it is of the correct length and height. If you want to grow vegetables in a trough below, the curtain pole needs to be installed high enough off the ground to allow for this.
Attach the shoe organizer / store. Use strong hooks or wire to do this as it must be able to support the weight of compost, plants and water.
Test the drainage. You can do this by pouring water into the pockets to see if they drain. If the pockets do not drain, you can poke a few holes in each of them to fix this. Proper drainage is essential because without it, plants with drown in too much water.
Fill each pocket with compost. Make sure that the compost you are using is of good quality. Fill the pocket with around 1 inch of compost to ensure that water does not overflow each time you water the plants or it rains.
Add plants or seeds. Some ideas would be thyme, sorrel, chives, mixed leaf, mustard, spinach and petit pois peas. You can eat the young leaflets and tendrils.
Drip aid. Use a piece of wood to ensure that excess water drips into the trough below. Prop the wood behind the bottom of the shoe organizer / store to push it forward over the trough.
Place the trough below the shoe organizer / store. Fill it with compost and add your plants or seeds.
