If you are like most Americans, chances are your mailbox is filled up with mostly junk mail – Red Plum flyers (remove yourself), Pennysaver booklets (remove yourself), and credit card offers. And if you are like the above-mentioned Americans, chances are you don’t do anything about it. You just pick up your mail and drop all that paper in the recycling bin without thinking twice. But did you know you can easily do your part to stop all this wastepaper from showing up at your door?
Family, friends, and readers ask me all the time “How can you stop credit cards from mailing blank checks?” so I figured with the New Year right around the corner, now would be a good time to put this information out there again. First off, here’s why you should stop these credit card offers from being delivered:
That last one alone should be enough of a reason to cancel the blank checks, right? You can easily stop credit cards from mailing blank checks to you by doing the following:
1. Call the number on the back of the card. Tell them you no longer want to receive cash advance check offers (and all other promotional materials) in the mail and to please stop sending them. After a few months, this should stop the mailings from cards you already have.
2. Visit Opt-Out Prescreen to opt out of credit and insurance offers. Doing so on the website will remove your name from the lists for 5 years, but sending in a paper form will remove it permanently. This should stop offers from new cards you aren’t even signed up for yet.
Once you complete both steps, you may keep receiving paperwork for a little while but it will stop. I have not gotten credit card offers or blank checks in the mail for years; it’s been wonderful. So as we approach 2013, take a few minutes out of your day to make a big difference that helps both you and our environment!
