There are a few more weeks of winter. And while I’m pleading for the snow to stop falling, a cold has taken up residence in my sinuses. I thought I’d share two of my favorite go-to remedies to sip when I’m under the weather.
Boil three cups of water. Cut about 10 thin slices of fresh ginger root and grind with pestle or rolling pin. Add to boiling water and let simmer for 25 minutes. Strain and add honey to taste.
Benefits of ginger: Of course, ginger is great for soothing stomach aches, but did you know that it is believed to also alleviate respiratory symptoms? Ginger tea is great for allergies, cold, and flu symptoms because it acts as an expectorant and thins mucus. Ginger is also an antioxidant and improves circulation, boosting the immune system by quickly transporting white blood cells to specific areas of the body to fight illness. Ginger tea may also have cancer-fighting abilities and may assist the liver with the flushing of toxins from the body.
Boil eight ounces of water and pour in mug. Add 1 tablespoon of raw organic apple cider vinegar. (Apple cider vinegar loses its health benefits when it undergoes pasteurization, filtration, and/or distillation.) Add honey to taste. Careful with this one – too much vinegar may be harmful to the enamel of your teeth. I recommend rinsing your mouth with water after drinking this concoction.
Benefits of apple cider vinegar: Vinegar makes the body more alkaline. More alkaline environments better fight off bacteria and viruses. Begin drinking apple cider vinegar tea upon the first sign of illness and drink several times per day until symptoms subside.
