Driving to work this morning, I realized that I had not stopped at a gas station since last Monday on the way back from the desert, 2 hours from my house. So, I made it all the way home, and back and forth to work 4 times, and I still dont need gas.
Earlier this year, I traded in my big, heavy, fast, comfortable 6 month old Volvo sedan. I loved that car; I had never driven anything so comfortable. It was hard to let it go…except for the gas mileage. I was getting 16 MPG on a daily basis, which is absurd. That’s in SUV/truck territory. So, I got rid of it. And got myself a MINI COOPER.
I had always thought they were a great looking car, but way too small for me. However, upon test driving one, I realized that they were much bigger than they looked from the outside. I am over 6 feet tall, and it is very comfortable to drive. The interior is top-notch and feels like the inside of a classic car. As an added bonus, the color I got is one that was only made in 2006, making it a rarity on the road, and I get stopped and stared at all the time.
The best part? I average 27.3 MPG in traffic on my commute. I don’t take the freeway to work, so I imagine it would be a lot better if I did, but my commute is hills and winding roads. So 27.3 MPG is pretty damn good.
I have noticed that there are less big trucks on the road lately. I dont know if it is my imagination or not, but it seems like more people have regular, people-sized cars. One can only hope that people are starting to realize that they don’t need their own school bus to drive to work by themselves. Evidence of this can be seen in my earlier post “High MPG most searched for cars on KBB” so maybe I am right.
Anyways….today I say thank you to my small car for saving me hundreds of dollars a month in gasoline.
