A partnership between International Paper and Green Mountain Coffee Roasters has resulted in the creation of what we have needed for a long, long time…the first eco-friendly paper coffee cup, the ecotainer. Since over 15 billion coffee cups are thrown in the trash each year in the United States alone, this is an incredible breakthrough. Conventional hot paper cups use a waterproof lining made from a oil-based plastic that is not sustainable and thus they are all just put in that secret place where we put all of our trash. This should put an end to this problem as long as coffee shops all over the world adapt the technology. Starbucks, Coffee Bean and the like need to start using these cups asap.
The two companies received the award for the category of Sustainable Business Partnerships Resulting in a Sustainable Product in honor of their partnership that resulted in the ecotainerTM cup – the first hot paper beverage cup made from fully renewable resources. The ecotainer, which was unveiled last summer, is lined with a bio-plastic derived from corn, making it compostable under the proper conditions.
Although I must say that I don’t understand why the majority of coffee places don’t just give you your coffee in a washable ceramic mug if you are drinking your coffee while sitting in the store…but since that never seemed to catch on, hopefully this will. Kudos to Groovy Green for finding this gem!
