The Lakota Indians Are Withdrawing From The Treaties.

Very interesting stuff here…seems the Lakotas have had enough of the U.S. government and are withdrawing completely from the treaties they signed, some of which are 150 years old.

We are no longer citizens of the United States of America and all those who live in the five-state area that encompasses our country are free to join us

I don’t know what I think about this – on one hand I think it is a bold move by a people that were decimated by the white people moving to this country. On the other hand, I think it might lead to more troubles for them. According to the article, the average lifespan of a Lakota man is a scant 44 years, and the suicide rate for teenagers is 150% of the national average. This is not good, and I can’t help but wonder if these numbers are going to get worse or better because of these actions.

The new country would issue its own passports and driving licences, and living there would be tax-free — provided residents renounce their US citizenship

Don’t get me wrong – they deserve a lot more than they were ever given by our government – we moved them around like cattle, we took their land, we massacred millions of them over the course of history. I just hope this plan does not backfire and make things even worse. But I don’t blame them – they want something better than what they were given by our government and it’s worth a try – what do they have to lose? I say it takes courage to stand up to this government and I hope it works out for them!

Of course, they are inviting anyone to come live on their land, tax free – I wonder how many people are going to take them up on their offer? Maybe I will go sneak a peak…;-)

  1. I read that article and the only conclusion that I could come to would be that with this break-away all the responsibility for their citizens will rest with them, that includes the bad and the good.

I guess it is like a kid moving out of his parents house, in a way.

I hope they do well in their endeavor and that they rise up quickly. (With many lawyers to back them)
