For those of you that know me, you know my wife is a teacher. One that wakes up every day and heads into work to take care of other people’s kids. She loves it and gets so much out of it. And as much as I think she has some days that she would like to just stay home and interact with the kids over the computer, she doesnt really think its a good idea. I told her about this article and all she said was “NO”. So, there you have it.
I dont believe school is just for learning history or math..I think kids need to go to school to learn how to interact with people, participate in discussions, create projects, etc etc….so, the idea of a child sitting home in front of a computer all day is awful. Thinking back to when I was in school, it was a pretty cool time in my life, as I am sure it was for most people. Now imagine that one job where you sat in a cubicle all day, staring at a screen, talking to no one. Imagine 7 years of that, day in and day out, and every once in a while you get to talk to a boss. THAT is what we are talking about here.
The school is called Chicago Virtual Charter School .
From CBS 2 Chicago:
“Virtual School will have an actual building. The school board is negotiating to open a learning center somewhere downtown. Students will commute there at least once a week.”
Huh? What? Once a week? So the rest of the time the kid will be sitting at home, staring at a computer screen. I seem to remember another kind of screen that my mom told me not to stare at all day…the television. Kids staying inside all day, with no contact with peers, staring at computer screens. This sounds like a recipe for disaster.
“There will be no P.E., art and music,” said Chicago Teachers Union president Marilyn Stewart.
The Chicago Teachers Union says children need the classroom.
Um, YES! Exactly! They need gym, art, music, recess….they need to be made fun of and make fun of…they need to learn to stand up for what is right…I could go on and on.
This is a disturbing story. Most of us spend our lives now staring at a computer..why start kids on this path in kindergarten?
As my teacher wife says….”NO”.
