Anyone up for eating meat covered with a bacteria-eating virus? Um hmm…YUMMY! Seems the FDA has approved a combination of 6 viruses called “bacteriophages”, which are meant to kill certain types of bacteria that tends to grow on meat and poultry products. Now personally, I cannot wait to bite into a nice steak covered in viruses that are meant to save me from bacteria. Nothing warms my heart more to know that the government has taken the necessary steps to inject me with even more crap while I eat food. And, as an added bonus, we wont even be aware that the meat we are eating has been sprayed with these viruses! Alright!
The teacher wife and I go out of our way to buy organic, grass fed, free range meat products..even when it means paying a lot more for it than the standard cage grown and force fed product. We feel it is worth the extra money to not have to worry that we are ingesting all sorts of chemicals that we might not know about. But thats just us. Remember when the FDA allowed Olestra and said it was safe? Everyone seemingly came down with a surprise case of irritable bowel syndrome and could not stay away from the toilet.
Wired News has a little more on the story, and you can find even more information about the story over at MSNBC and the Washington Post.
The FDA can tell me all they want that these viruses are safe and wont harm me. But personally, I would really like my food to not be covered with chemicals, growth hormones, and yes, newly approved viruses. Any thoughts?
